Chancroid

 WHAT IS CHANCROID?

     

Painful, pastular, dirty shallow based ulcer with a foul smell
About 50% of patients will present unilateral or bilateral lymph nodes
The swollen lymph nodes are painful.

  • Chancroid is a sexually transmitted infection caused by a bacteria (Haemophilus ducreyi)
  • The patient usually presents with single or multiple painful ulcer(s) with a dirty base (photo)
  • Some patients may complain of painful lumps in the groins
  • This condition is diagnosed by isolation of the bacteria by culture
  • It can be treated with appropriate antibiotics
